Wenger left in need of a comeback

Publicado

As Aaron Lennon was rounding Wojciech Szczesny to put Tottenham Hotspur two goals up on Arsenal, Arsene Wenger looked on in horror. As Spurs' players and staff celebrated, Wenger, having stood stock-still for a moment, made his way back to his seat. He stopped to aim a kick at the floor, and uttered a Gallic swearword. When half-time came, his head shook all the way down the White Hart Lane tunnel. Ten days previously, when Arsenal faced Bayern Munich, he had been similarly angry. After the game, he spent 30 minutes alone in a room before facing the press.

In the second half at Spurs, Wenger's team played better. These days, they always do when they are behind. There is a residual spirit among them. It just appears too late too often. It might even happen in Munich, but barring one of European football history's greatest comebacks, it will not be enough.

Wenger's repeated explanations of the psychological problem his team has when starting a game bear significant credence, but he is still yet to speak of a solution. After the North London derby, his protestations of dominating possession rang hollow. He was forced to admit that in the areas it most mattered, "in the front and in the back", his team had been second-best.

In the meantime, Wenger faces the deepest doubts of his managerial career. Comparisons with the previous season can be made, and Wenger pulled his team from their hole that time. Tottenham were reeled back in, their fans' collection of ‘Mind the Gap' T-shirts and banners consigned to the drawer and withdrawn from sale.

Both clubs lost stars in the summer. For all the talk of the effect of Robin van Persie's heading to Manchester, Tottenham lost Luka Modric, Rafael van der Vaart and Ledley King - playmaker, key attacking midfielder and inspirational captain. Arsenal also lost Alex Song, the purported anchorman whose best work was done in supplying assists to Van Persie, but simply put, Spurs bought better. Lukas Podolski has shown little beyond his known ability to strike the ball, and for all Santi Cazorla's excellence, he has not lifted Arsenal. Olivier Giroud is honest and hard-working but no Van Persie.

We can forget this ...

'It is not all over for Virender Sehwag'

Publicado

Virender Sehwag was shown the door after a series of abject failures but former India cricketers believe the explosive opener is still not finished and will make a strong comeback.

The writing had been on the wall. The new selection committee, has so far, not been scared of taking some bold calls. Gautam Gambhir was axed before the start of the Australia series while Harbhajan Singh was brought back with a firm reminder that no one in the team was indispensable. While Sehwag continued to fail and Murali Vijay found his footing in Test cricket, it was apparent to an even casual onlooker what fate had in store for the Najafgarh bomber. The only Indian to have scored triple tons in Tests, two at that, flopped in the first two Tests and was promptly sent packing.

However, the legendary Gundappa Vishwanath, felt Sehwag deserved at least one more chance, what with the South African tour coming up at the end of the year. He reasoned India could have afforded to take another chance with the out-of-form senior, given they could not lose the series any more.

Sehwag dropped for remaining Tests

Publicado

Virender Sehwag has been dropped from India's Test side for the first time since he made an emphatic comeback to the long format with a century in Adelaide in 2007-08. That, incidentally, remains his last century outside Asia. No replacement has been named for Sehwag for the remaining two Tests of the series against Australia, which makes Shikhar Dhawan a favourite to open in the Mohali Test starting on March 14.

The two remaining Tests of the current series, which India lead 2-0, are the last ones they are scheduled to play before they go on four continuous overseas tours beginning with South Africa later this year.

In his first reaction, Sehwag - who had been dropped from the ODI side for the series against England in January - tweeted: "Will continue to work hard for my place in the team. I trust my game and am confident that, 'I'll be back.' Best wishes to the team."

India squad: MS Dhoni (capt. & wk), M Vijay, Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Shikhar Dhawan, Ravindra Jadeja, Ishant Sharma, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Harbhajan Singh, R Ashwin, Pragyan Ojha, Ajinkya Rahane, Ashok Dinda, Cheteshwar Pujara.
